Service of Infectious and tropical diseases
The Infectious and Tropical Diseases Department (SMIT) at Bicêtre Hospital AP-HP deals with infectious diseases specific to the hospital's catchment area (Val-de-Marne). The SMIT brings together several specialized centers and areas of excellence, and is a key player in the fight against healthcare-associated infections and in the strategy of isolating at-risk patients.
The SMIT's mission is to prevent and treat:
- infections requiring hospital care (bacterial, fungal, parasitic and viral infections, particularly those that are difficult to treat due to resistance to anti-infective treatments: digestive and urinary tract infections, tuberculosis with resistant bacilli, resistant viruses, etc.),
- infections requiring hospital care (bacterial, fungal, parasitic and viral infections, particularly those that are difficult to treat due to resistance to anti-infective treatments: digestive and urinary tract infections, tuberculosis with resistant bacilli, resistant viruses, etc.).),
- primary or healthcare-related osteoarticular infections,
- infections occurring in immunocompromised patients (organ transplantation, onco-hematology, HIV,
- biotherapy, other immunosuppressions) and vulnerable patients (diabetes, renal failure, etc.).
- controlling bacterial resistance by coordinating the proper use of antibiotics,
- travel and migrant diseases (pre-departure advice, international vaccinations including yellow fever, diseases on return, malaria, etc.).
- vaccine-preventable infections, particularly in patients living with chronic illness or immunodepression who require specific vaccinations.
The SMIT is thus equipped with 26 hospital beds, including 6 negative pressure rooms for the isolation of highly contagious respiratory patients (tuberculosis, emerging viral respiratory infections) or patients infected with emerging highly resistant bacteria or BHRe. It also includes a Center for International and Immunodeficient Vaccinations, and outpatient consultations.
In addition to its healthcare missions, the SMIT team plays an active role in teaching infectious diseases at the University of Paris-Saclay's Faculty of Medicine, in the clinical training of medical and pharmacy students (hospital internships), and is developing several research themes in its areas of expertise (malaria, antibiotic therapy of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, tuberculosis, immunodeficient vaccination).
