Service of Intensive Care Medicine

It accommodates the most serious medical-surgical patients in its 12-bed intensive care unit, and those of intermediate severity in its 14-bed continuous monitoring unit. Patients admitted present one or more organ failures, whether or not associated with major surgery. Around 1,800 admissions are made each year.
The medical pathologies most frequently encountered are severe infectious states, acute respiratory insufficiency and severe cardiac failure. Much of the treatment, in addition to treating the cause, involves supplementing organ failure (mechanical ventilation, dialysis, circulatory support) and monitoring the patient 24/7. At least one resuscitation physician is always present in the department, and an ad hoc number of nurses and orderlies are on hand to provide care.
The department is also a university hospital department with dynamic clinical research and the publication of a large number of articles in high impact factor journals in the fields of ARDS management, cardiorespiratory interactions, characterization of the hemodynamic phenotype in septic shock, right ventricular failure and echocardiography. As such, the department regularly welcomes interns on interCHU training courses and foreign resuscitators coming to observe in the department. Finally, the department is an active member of the Centre de recherche en épidémiologie et santé des populations (CESP) team 5, which focuses on chronic kidney disease and its cardiovascular complications. Within this framework, it is currently leading a PHRC study on the long-term outcome of patients who have suffered acute renal failure in intensive care.

The Intensive Care and Resuscitation Department is attached to the Medical University Department (DMU) N° 4 "Heart and Vascular Disease".
