Service of Microbiology
The microbiology department has a threefold mission:
- meet the requirements linked to the activity of a local hospital,
- meet the requirements of reference medical specialty activities,
- participate in teaching and medical research in pediatrics.
The microbiology department specializes in the pediatric aspects of infectious pathology and handles analyses intended to establish the diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic follow-up of infectious diseases in children and pregnant women. The department advises clinicians on antibiotic therapy.
The department is responsible for hygiene and monitoring nosocomial infections, in liaison with the CLIN (nosocomial infection control committee), and is an integral part of the operational hygiene team (EOH).
The department has been an associated National Reference Center for Escherichia coli - Shigella since 2002. This reference activity is twofold:
- the diagnosis and molecular epidemiological analysis of E. coli responsible for pediatric hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), the leading cause of acute renal failure in children under three years of age,
- the study of virulence factors in extraintestinal E.coli responsible for meningitis, urosespis and septicemia.
