Service of Neuropediatrics
The pediatric neurology department, headed by Prof. Kumaran DEIVA, handles several types of general and rare neurological pathologies for which it has national and international expertise.
The pathologies under his care are:
- Autoimmune, inflammatory encephalitides, multiple sclerosis (MS) in children and adolescents, optic neuritis, transverse myelitis, opso-myoclonus syndrome, autoimmune or inflammatory neuropathies
- Metabolic leukoencephalopathies, adrenoleukodystrophy, metachromatic leukodystrophy, mitochondriopathies, Krabbe disease, mucopolysacharidoses
- Epilepsies including rare and/or drug-resistant epilepsies
- Strokes, arteriovenous malformations
The department is backed by 5 rare disease reference centers:
- Inflammatory diseases of the brain in children (MIRCEM) (coordinating site),
- Reference center for leukodystrophies and leukoencephalopathies (constituent site),
- Les maladies mitochondriales avec atteinte du système nerveux central (site constitutif)
- Les épilepsies rares (site compétence)
- Centre de référence des pathologies anomalies vasculaires neurologiques et cranofaciales (Pr Spelle- site coordonnateur)
- Les accidents vasculaires cérébraux (center national de référence de l'AVC de l'enfant, child neurovascular unit)
Many research activities are carried out in the department :
- Innovative therapeutic trials by:
- Gene therapy in neurodegenerative diseases such as leukodystrophies
- Trials with innovative immunomodulatory/immunosuppressive treatments in certain inflammatory/autoimmune diseases of the central nervous system
- Preventing the risk of recurrence in childhood stroke, evaluation of re-channeling procedures (thrombolysis/thrombectomy) in the acute phase of childhood stroke
