Service of Palliative Accompaniment and Support Care Team (ESPASS)

ESPASS-P, attached to the ESPASS department and the DMU ORPHé, is an interdisciplinary team - psychologist, nurse, doctor - available to all departments at Trousseau and La Roche Guyon hospitals, to care for children in palliative care and support their families.
The ESPASS-P collaborates with the referral teams on a principle of non-substitution, for integrated palliative care that is not limited to the terminal phase alone, but is articulated early on with curative care, whenever uncertainty prevails for a child suffering from a serious, life-threatening or life-limiting chronic pathology.
The ESPASS-P has a dual clinical mission, with children and their families on the one hand, and with teams on the other:

  • it contributes to the child's symptomatic management and support for his or her family, participates in the development of the care project, is involved in synthesis meetings or collegial meetings as defined by the Claeys-Leonetti law for decisions to limit or stop treatment, supports the organization of a possible return home;
  • it raises awareness and trains care teams in the palliative approach, accompanies and supports them when they are faced with particularly complex care.
