The Pneumology and Respiratory Intensive Care Department at Hôpital Bicêtre, headed by Professor Humbert, has a diverse focus in all areas of acute and chronic respiratory disease, with a particular interest in:

• acute and chronic pulmonary vascular diseases (pulmonary embolism and pulmonary hypertension)
• rare respiratory diseases
• severe asthma
• thoracic oncology
• respiratory intensive care

Aside from these specialized activities, the department's activity encompasses the usual pathologies of pneumology: COPD, bronchopulmonary infections, tuberculosis, respiratory allergology, pleural pathologies and all causes of acute and chronic respiratory failure.

The Pneumology Department is a certified Centre de Référence de l'Hypertension Pulmonaire and has organized the management of this rare disease through the creation of a network of 25 regional competence centers and the creation of a common computerized database (Registre Français de l'Hypertension Pulmonaire).

The department coordinates the Filière de Santé Maladies Respiratoires Rares RespiFIL and is a founding member of the European Reference Network ERN-LUNG.
The department is also labellisé Centre de Compétence de Maladies Pulmonaires Rares de l'Adulte.

The Pneumology Department at Bicêtre Hospital is part of the Département Médico-Universitaire (DMU) THORINNO, whose coordinator is Professor Thierry Chinet, head of the Pneumology Department at Ambroise-Paré Hospital.

The aim of this THORINNO DMU is to bring together the skills and areas of expertise of two recognized centers in the field of thoracic pathology:

• pulmonary arterial hypertension
• thoracic oncology
• asthma and respiratory function tests

At the scientific level, the pulmonology department has acquired an international reputation in the field of clinical research into pulmonary vascular disease and severe asthma. Alongside this strong clinical research activity, the basic research activity of the Pneumology Department has developed in recent years within the INSERM unit UMR_S999 devoted to the pathophysiology and therapeutic innovation of Pulmonary Hypertension. Within this framework, two University Hospital Research projects have been awarded, including the RHU DESTINATION 2024 dedicated to chronic thrombo-embolic pulmonary hypertension.
